Internship Vacancy


The United Nations University Institute of Advanced Studies is currently accepting applications for the following internship positions:

Objective

The purpose of the UNU-IAS Internship Programme is threefold:

  • To provide a framework for undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate students from diverse academic backgrounds to enhance their experience through practical assignments
  • To provide students with hands-on experience and a better understanding of UN organization and activities
  • To provide UNU-IAS with the assistance of qualified students specialized in various professional fields.

Eligibility

Applicants should

  • Be, registered at a university or research institute or recent graduates at the time of application and during the internship
  • Have a research topic which is linked to the Institute’s current projects
  • Be willing to interact with UNU-IAS’ faculty members for mutual benefit
  • Be fluent in English.


Duration

The minimum duration of an internship is three months, with a possibility of extension for up to a maximum of six months.


Hours of Work and Days Off

The Programme operates on a full-time basis. Interns are expected to work during the normal office hours ( 9:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. ) from Monday through Friday, five days a week under the supervision of a UNU-IAS faculty member. Interns are granted days off on UNU official holidays, sick and other contingency leaves, with the permission of a supervisor.


Status

Interns shall:

  • Be considered gratis personnel . They are not staff members.
  • Not be sought or accepted as substitutes for staff to be recruited against posts authorized for the implementation of mandated programmes and activities.
  • Not represent UNU-IAS, UNU n or the United Nations in any official capacity; and
  • Not be eligible to apply for, or be appointed to established UN posts for a period of six months following the end of their internship.


Interns’ Expenses

Interns are not financially remunerated by UNU-IAS. Costs and arrangements for transportation, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibilities of interns or their sponsoring institutions.

UNU-IAS accepts no responsibility for the medical insurance of interns or costs arising from accidents and illnesses incurred during an internship. Therefore, interns are requested to provide proof of enrolment in a health insurance plan.

Applicants shall:

  • Submit their résumé or curriculum vitae, a cover letter describing their career goals and reasons for applying, and an Internship Application Form .  
  • Specify your possible starting/ending period of the internship and area of your research interests in our programme.
  • Email application materials to the Internship Programme Coordinator at intern[at]ias.unu.edu .  

Please note that the résumé (curriculum vitae) and essay must be written in English.

Responses will be given only to those candidates who are qualified for the Programme.
