Research Programmes Accepting Applications
TEXT SIZE  Increase   Decrease

The application period for 2014 fellowship programmes has closed. Application forms for next year's fellowship programmes will be posted in December 2014.

An essential part of the application for both the PhD and Postdoctoral fellowships is a research proposal outlining the intended work. The research during the fellowship should be of professional interest to the applicant and of direct relevance to the research agenda of their selected UNU-IAS or UNU-CPR programme. Applicants are therefore highly encouraged to familiarize themselves with UNU-IAS and UNU-CPR research areas. Research proposals should clearly relate to one of the Research Programmes at UNU-IAS and UNU-CPR.

The following Research Programmes and Projects at UNU-IAS are accepting applications for UNU-IAS PhD Fellows, UNU-IAS Postdoctoral Fellows and JSPS-UNU Postdoctoral Fellows:

Sustainability Science
Environmental Governance (Biodiversity)
Cities and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
Science Technology for SDGs

The following Research Programmes at UNU-CPR are accepting applications for JSPS-UNU Postdoctoral Fellows:

Peace and Security Policies at the UN
Post-2015 UN Development Framework

Sustainability Science [UNU-IAS]

Drastic environmental changes such as climate change, urbanization and land degradation are the major root causes that challenge sustainability, profoundly affecting development. The Sustainability Science programme provides unique opportunities to assess these changes, analyse impacts, propose response strategies and evaluate their sustainability from a natural science perspective supported by interdisciplinary considerations of social and economic perspectives. Candidates with field experience seeking to link scientific results to applied research and policy formulation are especially encouraged to apply. Familiarity with mathematical modelling, spatial analysis or statistical analyses will be an important asset. The programme invites research proposals on the following broad thematic areas:

  • Climate change impacts and adaptation (focusing on water and/or food security)
  • Local actions for eco-systems sustainability under global change
  • Disaster (floods and landslides) and environmental risk assessment & management
  • Studies on linkages to ecosystems services
  • Integration of traditional knowledge to enhance resilience of modern food production systems

Required qualifications:

  • Postdoctoral Fellowships: PhD degree (no ABDs) in engineering, natural sciences or social sciences
  • Fluency in English is essential
  • Applications from women and/or candidates originating from developing countries are encouraged

Environmental Governance (Biodiversity) [UNU-IAS]

The selected Fellow will research at the forefront of applied research relevant to environmental policy in the area of biodiversity. One focus is the architecture of environmental governance and agency within and beyond nation states. This includes governance for post-2015 development goals in the form of sustainable development goals (SDGs), promotion of environmental protection, and policy and institutions designed to promote other objectives such as the enhancement of sustainable development and green growth, especially in developing countries.  Another focus is on the area of biodiplomacy for development, or how the biodiversity and development discussions are framed at the international level and implemented at the local level.

Required qualifications:

  • Postdoctoral Fellowships: PhD degree (no ABDs) from a range of disciplines including but not limited to economics, legal and political science
  • Demonstrated research skills in similar areas
  • Ability to design and implement research involving field work
  • Fluency in English is essential and a working knowledge of other languages is desirable

Cities and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) [UNU-IAS]

The selected Fellow will conduct research on the solutions to global environmental problems that can also achieve other developmental goals at the local level, such as poverty alleviation. He/she will analyse how cities in developing countries create the institutional capacity to implement effective environmental policies with social inclusion. The Fellow’s research should be linked to the current discussions on SDGs and the post-2015 development agenda for cities.

Required qualifications:

  • Postdoctoral Fellowships: PhD degree (no ABDs), preferably in a field related to applied social or environmental sciences, such as urban planning, development studies, public policy, environmental policy, management and economics
  • Demonstrated research skills in similar areas
  • Ability to design and implement research involving field work
  • Fluency in English is essential and a working knowledge of other languages is desirable

Science and Technology for SDGs
 [UNU-IAS]

This fellowship will focus on the need for science, technology and innovation (STI)-based transformations, as well as on how the science and technology community can better inform policymakers and contribute to the formulation of sustainable development goals (SDGs) and the post-2015 development agenda. While STI-based economic and social transformations have lifted hundreds of millions of people out of poverty in the developing world, extreme inequalities, in a multi-dimensional sense, have become part of this transformation, making the post-2015 development agenda and the formulation of SDGs more challenging. This fellowship will focus on the various policy aspects of addressing the impacts of climate change, elimination of poverty, and reduction of inequality through science, technology and innovation-based transformations.

Required qualifications:

  • Postdoctoral Fellowships: PhD degree (no ABDs) in the natural or social sciences with substantial focus on science and technology for sustainable development
  • Demonstrated research skills in areas related to science, technology and innovation
  • Ability to design and implement research involving field work
  • Fluency in English is essential and a working knowledge of other languages is desirable

Peace and Security Policies at the UN [UNU-CPR]

This fellowship will be with UNU’s Centre for Policy Research (UNU-CPR) in Tokyo for policy-relevant work in areas at the heart of the UN’s peace and security agenda, in particular conflict prevention, conflict resolution, peacekeeping or peace-building, or its efforts to confront new challenges created by international organized crime and trafficking, terrorism, piracy as well as in the area of cybersecurity. Applicants will need to demonstrate an interest in influencing policy debates and in shaping UN decision-making on such peace and security topics. Knowledge translation, policy development and advocacy are central to the new Centre’s mandate.

Required qualifications:

  • PhD degree (no ABDs) in the social sciences or humanities generally, or in international law, international relations, conflict and peace studies in particular
  • Fluency in English is essential
  • Equally qualified candidates from developing countries as well as female candidates will receive preference

Post 2015 UN Development Framework [UNU-CPR]

This fellowship will be with UNU’s Centre for Policy Research (UNU-CPR) in Tokyo for policy-relevant work relating to the post-2015 UN development framework and the priorities, goals and principles that should drive it. Applicants will need to demonstrate an interest in influencing policy debates and in shaping UN decision-making on such development topics.
