A community of scholars working on the world’s most pressing problems

United Nations University Institute of Advanced Studies (UNU-IAS) engages international expertise at local, regional, and global levels from multiple disciplines in the natural, social, and life sciences. This combined expertise is the cornerstone of our research programmes, allowing us to focus on the development of informed policy-making to meet sustainable development challenges.

UNU-IAS was inaugurated in April 1996. It conducts research, postgraduate education and capacity development, both in-house and in co-operation with an interactive network of academic institutions and international organizations. The thematic direction of UNU-IAS concerns the interactions of social and natural systems. The current research agenda focuses on strategic paths to sustainable development and under this broad theme projects focus on biodiversity, sustainable development governance, urban ecosystems, science and technology policy options for developing and least developed countries, and education for sustainable development.

Bringing together the best in sustainable development thinking

Our research programmes are carried out by an academic community which includes faculty and staff, administrative personnel, visiting professors, PhD and postdoctoral fellows, augmented by a global network of scholars and academic institutions.
