Event Description
Event language: Japanese

UNU-IAS Operating Unit Ishikawa/Kanazawa (OUIK) will organize a series of seminars in preparation for the 11th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 11) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), which will be held in October 2012 in Hyderabad, India. By inviting keynote speakers and holding panel discussions with experts – including researchers and policymakers – this seminar series aims at increasing public awareness and understanding of CBD/COP 11.

At CBD/COP 10, the Satoyama Initiative was identified as a potentially useful tool to better understand and support human-influenced natural environments for the benefit of biodiversity and human well-being, and the International Partnership for Satoyama Initiative (IPSI) was established. The first seminar in this series focuses on international perspectives on satoyama and satoumi, and introduces activities by Ishikawa Prefecture.

Outcomes of Rio+20 and IPSI activities will also be introduced for a panel discussion on the importance and roles of satoyama and satoumi in Noto Peninsula, which was designated as a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS) site in 2011.
